• TEAM LIST TUESDAY: ROUND 20

    Knock-On Effect NSW Cup 2024

SEVEN ROUNDS REMAIN

It wasn’t our prettiest performance when we took on the Rabbitohs in the final of the Mario Fenech Cup at Coogee Oval last Sunday, but it sure was a gritty one. Bears went into the game with a varied side compared to our previous matches, including missing our full back and playmaker Jake Toby due to injury. On the other side, Rabbitohs named a decent squad on game day including the late inclusion of Peter Mamouzelos who has played 11 NRL games this season. A battle raged for near on twenty minutes after the referees opening whistle, with both sides attacking and defending hard, before the first points were awarded to the Rabbitohs. Only five minutes later, Bears retaliated with a dummy half scoot from Jayden Yates who read the play well and made the most of a gap on the try line. Kieran Hayman converted, and the scores were locked at 6 – 6. Near on ten minutes later and further Rabbitohs try attempts denied by solid Bears defence, Yates pulls out a kick defusal to run away with the ball, nabbing a double for the game. Hayman converts and the Bears lead 6 – 12 with four minutes remaining in the half. The boys looked good to hit the sheds with a six-point buffer, but the Rabbitohs had other plans. Driving the ball over the line in the last seconds of the first half, they added the 4 points with the kick waived away. The score sat at 10 – 12 to the good guys.

The second half started with the red & black attacking the line, ball sweeps to the wing and finds Allan Fitzgibbon who easily jogs it over. With strong winds the kick is unconverted, and the score shows 10 – 16. Maintaining momentum, the boys are on the push again, this time Hayman sees the gap, backs himself and takes the points. Converts his own try to increase the lead to 22 – 10. And for almost thirty minutes this is where the score remained. With fatigue setting it from both sides after a physically demanding game, the Bunnies did manage to find the opportunities running in two tries in the last 3 minutes. With a kick on the siren to level the scores, and the Bears fans hearts in their throats, the kick was waived away and the red & black fans rejoiced! Bears take the two points, hold on to their spot-on top of the ladder and bring home the Mario Fenech Cup for 2024.

“Another tough grinding win by the boys at a very tough venue to play at. Souths had their strongest 17 out in months and I thought they defended very well in a very physical game” stated Head Coach Pat Weisner. He continued “We made 10 errors in the first half which was unacceptable, but we turned it around and went 16 sets in a row without an error in the 2nd half to put the game away, despite a late scare in the last 4 mins”. Looking ahead to the big first verse second clash this Saturday in the nation’s capital when we take on the Canberra Raiders, Weisner commented “With the short turnaround this week we need to freshen up, manage our injuries and prepare ourselves for a huge game down there at Belconnen against a full-strength Raiders team”.

Come on out to cheer on the Bears this weekend, make a weekend out of it, and wear the red & black with pride at Belconnen. Game kicks off at 2pm and the Bears team bus will be stopping at the Clubhouse Hotel in Yass on the way home to meet & greet with local fans. Drop by and say hi!
